Five European Soccer Stories to Watch This Season

Last week we gave you five stories to follow for the EPL.  Here are five stories to watch from the continent.

Balance of Power: English spending and consequent drawing power has declined with the pound and increased taxes, and Spain is slowly becoming the preeminent league in Europe.  Real Madrid swiped Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema, the biggest stars playing in the Premier League, Serie A and Ligue Un, respectively.  Barcelona also brought in Italy’s best player, Zlatan Ibrahimovic.  Serie A is now a distant third and, to add further insult, probably will lose its fourth Champions League place to Germany.  Unfortunately, Silvio Burlusconi’s “playboy charms” cannot alter UEFA coefficients.

Pending his official unveiling after international duty, Brazilian superstar Kaka (or KaKA! if you’re Dave O’Brien) has agreed to a world-record transfer from A.C. Milan to Real Madrid.  The final figure, about $94 million, significantly trumps the second largest transfer, Real Madrid’s purchase of Zinedine Zidane from Juventus for $75 million in 2001.  It was far lower than the $150 million offered by Manchester City in January.
